Why Infrared Thermography Should Be Part of Your Electrical Maintenance Plan

Whether it’s a commercial, industrial, or multi-use property, proper maintenance is critical to managing your building’s electrical system. However, many maintenance and repair procedures require for extended service disruptions, resulting in lost productivity, business, and more. However, modern maintenance tools like high-resolution infrared thermography can help manage your electrical system proactively, identifying potential problems without the need for extended outages.
For nearly 30 years, MCL Power has provided complete electrical maintenance services for commercial and industrial clients across Western Canada. Today, we use cutting-edge infrared thermography to proactively manage our clients’ electrical systems, identifying potential problems before they cause serious damage. Keep reading below to learn more about why infrared thermography should be part of every electrical maintenance plan, as well as MCL Power’s complete range of electrical maintenance services.
What is Infrared Thermography?
Infrared thermography (IRT) detects thermal energy (heat) coming from objects. It’s the same technology used in military night-vision goggles, although it has many potential applications beyond seeing in the dark!
MCL Power uses high-resolution IRT to detect “hot spots” in electrical systems. Heat and electricity are generally a bad combination; excess heat is a sign of increased electrical resistance and arcing potentially caused by loose/deteriorated connections, overloads, open circuits, defective equipment, component failure, and more.
Unlike many maintenance procedures, infrared thermography is non-invasive. IRT detects heat through walls and other barriers, meaning building owners don’t have to rip up their property to check their electrical systems. Additionally, IRT tests can be performed with the power on, meaning you don’t need to schedule a power outage (and sacrifice business hours or productivity).
Why Infrared Thermography?
Overall, IRT is among the easiest and most accurate ways to identify potential problems in your electrical system before failures that lead to outages, fires, and other potential safety hazards. Because of its speed, cost-effectiveness, and ability to detect potential issues early, infrared thermography should be part of any electrical maintenance plan.
Because IRT can detect potential issues well before catastrophic failure, it can save operations thousands on emergency repairs and unexpected downtime. IRT can be conducted with virtually no downtime or service interruptions, meaning organizations don’t have to sacrifice productivity to attain peace of mind about their electrical systems.
